Literacy Activity: Create Your Own Ending!

Some of our favorite books to use for this activity. Click on the picture to purchase from Amazon.

Activity Steps

  1. Have your child pick a book that is not one they have memorized.
  2. Read the story out loud to your child.
  3. Stop BEFORE reading the last page (or last couple of pages depending on your child’s skill set
  4. Ask questions!
    • What do you think happens next? Continue to prompt the child from there depending on what they say to get as much detail as possible, but don’t continue for more than 1 min. You don’t want them to get frustrated or bored with the activity
    • What do you think the (main character) feels right now? If you child is new to identifying feelings give them 2-3 options to choose from. How do you know that is how (that character) feels?
    •  NOTE: Don’t say “main character” because your child likely has no idea what that is. Use the actual name of the character.
  5. Ok lets find out!! Read the ending.
    • Did you like the ending? What did you, or didn’t you, like about it?
    • Was it the same as your ending? Which did you like better, your ending of the books?
  6. Extension- if your child is still engaged and you are wanting to draw out the activity try the following:
    • Repeat steps 1-5 with a different book.
    • Ask your child what they would change about the other parts of the book.
    • Give your child crayons, color pencils, paints or whatever! and tell them to draw their ending. You can print a picture of the main character from a google image search to give them a starting point.
