Early Literacy Game

Activity Steps

  1. Download this free set of bingo cards. There are 30, so you can get lots of use out of this game.
  2. Tell your todler to start looking around your house and try and find the letters on the page.
    • Explain the rules of Bingo, and what you want them to get to win. Straight line, four corners, black out, etc.
    • If you have two preschoolers, have them race. If you only have one preschooler set a timer for 10 minutes.
    • Tell them where they can look for the letter. I suggest letting them have the run of the place if it is safe. Shampoo bottle, motivational poster/art, spice cabinet, refrigerator. Anywhere that letters exsist in you house they can look.
  3. When they find a matching letter they have to let you know to confirm they found it. Say they found the “K” on the ketchup bottle, you confirm and hand them a sticker.
    • If you don’t already have a supply of stickers, I highly recommend you get some! They are so useful for everything from games to getting your child to stay quite in church. Here are some basic ones to get started.
    • Or, If you want to get fancy, try these pop up jewel stickers
    • If you don’t want to get the stickers, a marker will work as well, but its so much less fun for your child 🙂
  4. Review what they have found!
    • If they are learning letters, tell them awesome, that is a (say what letter) it makes the sound (make sound).
    • If they know the letter some of the time, ask them “what letter is it? And What sound does it make?” Then either confirm or say, no its (the right answer)
    • Once they get good at their capital letters, move on to lower case
  5. Once you have a winner…they get the prize.
    • I find 100%fruit juice popcicles to be a big motivator for my child. Determine what your child likes best and reward them with that.
  6. Extension: Once your child gets pretty decent at the letters, and if you have multiple family members you can enlist to play, play regular bingo where one person is the caller. The attached PDF’s have details on how to do this. Don’t help your child this time.
