Literacy Activity: Card Slap
Activity Steps
- Write 13 Letters on 13 notecards. You can usually find index cards at the grocery store. If you would prefer delivery here is a link to some I use. I do not use colored index cards for this activity because it could confuse the child, but as they get better with their letters you could try using colored cards to make for an extra challenge!
- Tape the 13 cards to the wall so that your child can see and reach all the letters.
- Repeat step 1 with the same letters. You will stack these on the ground in front of you face down.
- Sit with your child on the floor at least 4 steps away from the wall. Make sure there is a clear path between you and the wall!
- Take Turns flipping over a card. When you see the card, race to slap the matching leter on the wall while calling out the correct letter.
- Whoever slaps the correct letter and correctly calls the name first wins the round
- Repeat Until you have gone through all the cards.
- Continue with the same set of cards for several weeks when repeating the activity, or until your child regularly gets the answers write. Twenty-six letters is a LOT to learn at one time.
- Extension- As your child gets better with letter identification switch things up.
- First change the letters to lower case letters.
- Then add on sounds. So instead of just saying “A” you would have to say “A, Ah” to win the round.
